What is SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric made of?
SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric is made of a base fabric of woven high strength expanded PTFE fibers. In the case of our coated/waterproof fabrics, additional coatings are applied to render it completely waterproof.
What is PTFE?
PTFE stands for PolyTetraFluoroEthylene, the most inert polymer known. Chemically, it consists of a polymer chain ‘backbone’ of carbon with fluorine bonds. These bonds are exceptionally strong and are the reason for PTFE’s exceptional resistance to UV, chemicals, etc. PTFE is commonly used in very low (cryogenic) temperatures, as well as very high temperatures in a wide variety of industrial, pharmaceutical, medical and consumer products. PTFE is considered part of a larger family of ‘fluoropolymers’
How is SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric different from “PTFE/glass” fabrics?
Commonly described as ‘PTFE/glass or PTFE/fiberglass’ fabrics, these fabrics utilize a base fabric of somewhat brittle fiberglass fibers which are then coated with fluoropolymers. Unlike fiberglass fibers which can break when folded and flexed, SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric can withstand repeated folding and flexing without compromising its strength or waterproofness.
Does SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric protect one from UV?
It depends on the fabric. The 4T20 fabrics block nearly 100% of UV, while the 4T40 fabrics block over 85% of ambient UV (refer to Technical Data, Light Characteristics for the Transmittance, Reflectance and Absorption Characteristics).
How does SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric impact the environment?
SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric is free of chlorine, plasticizers, stabilizer, and catalysts. Furthermore, there is no contribution to ozone depletion (CFC’s) or chloro/bromo-dioxins and furans (“dioxins”). For additional details, refer to Environmental Impact under Technical Data.
How long will it last?
Because SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric is made from 100% fluoropolymers (which are unaffected by UV sunlight, pollution, etc.) it will not break down like other materials with exposure to the sun. Consequently the expected life is 25+ years, with a full 15 year warranty (contact us for details).
Isn’t SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric, simply ‘GORE-TEX®’ Fabric?
SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric is designed specifically to meet the stringent requirements of a building material, while GORE-TEX® is intended for apparel uses. Both are designed and made by W. L. Gore & Associates, a company that is well known for innovative and reliable high-performance products.
Can I print on SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric?
At present we have not found a durable printing method that will bond to our fabric, which is specifically designed to shed dirt and debris. However, dramatic and changeable special effects can be created with lighting and digital projection.
What seaming methods can be used with SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric?
It depends on the fabric. All of our Coated/Waterproof fabrics can be welded using Radio Frequency (RF), hot bar, or hot air welding equipment (refer to Technical Data on Seaming Recommendations). Our uncoated fabrics can only be fabricated using a more conventional seaming method of sewing. In this instance, we highly recommend utilizing Tenara® Sewing Thread, as it is comprised of the same material and will be comparable in life to the fabric.
Is SEFAR® Architecture TENARA® Fabric available in colors?
Yes, we can manufacture custom colors to your specification, however a significant minimum order Qty of material is required. These custom fabrics can employ either a pigmented coating, or in the case of uncoated woven fabric, a pigmented yarn. Lead times for these fabrics can vary significantly depending on the color desired. Please contact us to discuss your needs.
