'She Changes, 2005' by Janet EchelmanThis striking addition to the waterfront area of Porto-Matosinhos in Portugal is reminiscent of the fishing nets that are so important to the local culture. The dynamic sculpture measures 46 meters/150 feet in diameter and is 14 stories high. It is made of netting fashioned from red and white Tenara® Architectural Fiber, braided into cords. It seems to float in the air, held aloft by a huge 50-ton steel ring suspended by cables that connect to three poles of varying heights, allowing the sculpture to move and undulate with the wind. Dramatic uplighting transforms this iconic sculpture into a beacon at night. The sculpture was created by American artist Janet Echelman, and was completed in 2005 to worldwide acclaim. |
